Jon Garfunkel: Crowdsourcing a crutch for (some) lazy reporters

Steve is "crowdsourcing" the new version of the "Rise of the Blogs" article. Jon Garfunkel says that crowdsourcing is a crutch for lazy reporters. So, isn't Jon calling Steve lazy?

Ok, I'll admit it: I was typing a post reply here when I got the inspiration to punch out that article. But I've been helping Steve and Heather on the the 2005 update exercise. I think it's a good idea (and I find it humorous that when I Google OhMyNews to find out more current financials, I end up turning to... a BusinessWeek article.)

Also, I've been thinking about this notion of "post facto" journalism for a while. Strangely, here I was talking about this with Heather two years ago.

So let me take the time to clarify the above. My definition of post facto was not meant to overlap very much with the concept of crowdsourcing-- where the author directly asks his or her readers for help in preparing a story.

Threats clouds BC dorm debate

One blog that allegedly registered anti-Semitic and sexist comments against one neighbor has been closed to the public. And a blog of neighbors who oppose BC's expansion has been closed to nonmembers because of the number of hateful postings it received.

A few posts calling anyone who opposes BC's plans "whiners" and worse remain at the Allston Brighton TAB site. University officials stressed that the blogs are not affiliated with the school, and that if the offending comments can be traced to BC students, officials will take disciplinary action.

Since Boston College submitted its Institutional Master Plan in early December, the Boston Redevelopment Authority and the Allston Brighton Community Task Force, an advisory body of BC neighbors, have collected public reactions.

Viggo Mortensen Revels In History Of 'Promises'

Starting in 2001, movie fans from around the globe came to know and love Viggo Mortensen as the noble, charismatic leader Aragorn in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

But for his last two major film projects, his characters have teetered in the middle before traveling to the opposite end of the heroic spectrum, proving that he's not so concerned with his screen image as much as he is finding complex, challenging roles to get his hands dirty.

Who says you can't tarnish that One Ring to rule them all? .

Father shocked to hear dipset music on disney CD

A father in the Roseville section of Sacramento, Ca. was shocked to discover explicit music from the Diplomats on a Disney Channel Hits CD that was supposed to contain music from Hannah Montana and High School Musical. According to CBS 13, Jeremy Danielson purchased the CD for his daughter at a local Toys R Us store, but received quite a surprise when his family opened it up on Christmas morning. “It was definitely not Hannah Montana, it was like graphic lyrics, like gangsta rap," Danielson told a reporter. “Real explicit lyrics, sexual content, just stuff you don't want your little kids to hear." In a video report posted on the CBS website, the song “I Love You" from the first Diplomats group album, Diplomatic Immunity, can clearly be heard playing in the background. “We are a Christian family and we don't bring media like that into our house," Danielson said.

DEP forced to postpone UK dates

New Jersey metalheads The Dillinger Escape Plan have postponed their already rescheduled UK dates for next month following an injury to guitarist Ben Weinman.

In an echo, of sorts, of something that happened to similarly successful rockers My Chemical Romance in the recent past, Weinman suffered a injury while filming a video. The guitarist has broken his foot, to quote, "pretty severely".

Says Weinman: "Unfortunately due to a freak accident during our video shoot I managed to break my foot. After two doctors visits it is clear that we will have to postpone our US and European tour until a later date. New dates will be posted soon and we promise to come back bigger and better then ever."

The five-piece, whose new album Ire Works is released on November 12 via Relapse, were due to tour the UK from November 3 onwards - check here for postponed dates.
