Plain White T's join the party

Indeed, emo is a musical form given to such acute introversion that its leading proponents write songs discussing the current state of the scene, and there is already a renegade subgenre, screamo. Inevitably, most emo acts hate being called emo.

"I don’t know if you’d call us emo," confirms Plain White T’s singer, and the writer of Delilah, Tom Higgenson. "I think it may have helped us to begin with. A lot of kids came to us on MySpace and Pure Volume because of our emo reputation, but we just write good love songs. I’m as influenced by the Beatles as anyone else – they’re one of the greatest bands of all time because they wrote great songs. The curse of bands like Fall Out Boy is that their music doesn’t appeal to people over the age of 25.

May 2006

My last two homes in Chicago each had their own unique historical aspects, each an example of a classic style unique to that city's storied design past. My spacious condo in a circa 1904, six-unit apartment building, had a gracious, airy floor plan made for entertaining, with a split-parlor living room, beamed-ceilinged dining room and original windows throughout. My most recent home, in the city's famed Bungalow Belt, was one of about 80,000 brick houses built between the early 1910s and the late 1920s, in a collar around the city's outer borders. It had two layers of crown molding, 9-ft. ceilings and built-in, glass-door-fronted bookcases on either side of the ornamental fireplace. Both of these places had acres of full-grained oak trim, still with the original finish.

Have you ever tried decorating with that much oak? There are, perhaps, three colors that go well with it, and I used variations of these dark, earthy, depressing hues over and over and over again.

STALLARD: The 2007 Goofi awards

And finding a single, worthy recipient of a Goofi Award — named for a former heavyweight boxer who legally changed his name to "Goofi" — proved a daunting task indeed.

Still, I think you'll agree that the names on this list deserved every consideration.

Michael Vick, Atlanta Falcons/U.S. Penitentiary (Leavenworth) — Nobody, and I mean nobody, spawned as much outrage as Vick after word came that he'd been a major player in a dog-fighting ring. News and video that Vick had reportedly been involved in the brutal killings of dogs that didn't "win" sickened even the most hardened viewer.

The stupid part, to me, is that the guy's making an ungodly sum of money from his NFL contract and endorsements (at the time, Vick's was the top-selling jersey among fans).

Youths share technology with adults, sometimes grudgingly

They use Twitter, which allows blogging from one's mobile phone or BlackBerry, or Hulu.com, a site where they can download videos and TV programs.

They customize their cell phones with various faceplates and ringtones. And, sometimes, they find ways to exclude adults -- using high-frequency ringtones that teens can hear but most adults can't, for instance.

Nowhere are the technological turf wars more apparent than on social networking sites, such as MySpace and Facebook, which went from being student-oriented to allowing adults outside the college ranks to join.

Gary Rudman, a California-based youth market researcher, has heard the complaints. He regularly interviews young people who think it's "creepy" when an older person -- we're talking someone they know -- asks to join their social network as a "friend." It means, among other things, that they can view each others' profiles and what they and their friends post.
