This week's music scene: Best bets

Joseph Arthur. He's as prolific as he is tough to pin down. Eminently talented New Yorker Arthur writes great songs as easily as he makes paintings - often doing both at the same time on stage. He recently opened his own gallery, the MOMAR (Museum of Modern Arthur) in Brooklyn. He plays Le National, 1220 Ste. Catherine St. E., tonight with Montreal rock-out upstarts Hot Springs at 9 p.m. Tickets cost $20 in advance, $22 at the door. Call 514-845-2014. (T'Cha Dunlevy)

Yael Wand. There's been some solid critical buzz around northern B.C.'s Yael Wand, and the singer-songwriter's second album, At Your Door, is a promising effort that crosses acoustic roots-based sounds with a hint of blues and Israeli folk music. She's at Ste. Anne de Bellevue's Adair Coffee House, 24 Maple Ave., tonight at 8.

Election 2008

We're trying to get the name of every Dartmouth student who votes today, in order to create a database for next year and the general election. Everyone is really pumped about what's going on and our vans have been really full. Drivers have made "Election Day" playlists and are blaring the music as they drive around campus, so we're getting a lot of attention. Pauline Bartolone

Maine's 1st District Congressional race: Where they stand

Cote said in an interview that he changed his party registration from Democratic to Republican in 2000, then became a Democrat again in 2006. Meister registered as a Democrat in October, shortly before he announced his candidacy, but he said he previously considered himself an unregistered Democrat.

Neither of them supports a single-payer health care system, impeachment hearings, or cutting off funds for the Iraq war.

"I think that if we were to pull the troops out immediately, we would leave a disaster" Meister said.

Cote, an Iraq war veteran, is calling for a diplomatic push aimed at separating the warring Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish factions, decentralizing power, and withdrawing American troops. "The stability of the region is at stake," he said.

In the Republican race, Dean Scontras of Eliot is facing off against Charlie Summers of Scarborough.

This week's most popular

I've been reading about the Storm worm for nearly a year now and have found what it delivers to my e-mail in-box at least a few times a week: spam. Those e-mails entice you to open an attachment containing a hot stock tip, a holiday greeting or a link to a Web site to read a breaking news item. Doing any of these will install a malware program called a Trojan horse that will hijack a personal computer and turn it into a zombie remotely controlled by hackers.Malware and scams are typical of spam, but the Storm worm is particularly serious business, with a complex story behind it.The Storm worm is a sophisticated bit of malware written by hackers who have assembled a botnet of thousands of rouge computers around the world, all controlled by hackers presumed to be based in Russia and funded by organized crime.

Jerry Seinfeld's Bee Movie flies high at US box office

Tom Cruise's rare foray into low-budget drama, Lions for Lambs opened at No.4 with $US6.7 million, which was in line with modest industry expectations. Meryl Streep co-stars in the critically maligned political saga, as does Robert Redford, who also directed. It marks the first United Artists release since Cruise and production partner Paula Wagner took control of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.'s dormant art-house division a year ago. The only other new release in the top 10 was the indie woman-in-distress thriller P2, which came in at No.8 with $US2.2 million. Rachel Nichols stars as a young executive pursued in an underground garage by a sadistic security guard. Bee Movie was distributed by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc. Universal Pictures is a unit of General Electric Co and Warner Bros.

The Complete Bushisms

If you found somebody that had information about an attack on America, you'd want to know as best as we can to find out what the facts are."—Philadelphia, Pa., Dec. 12, 2005

"I think we are welcomed. But it was not a peaceful welcome."—Philadelphia, Dec. 12, 2005, on the reception of American forces in Iraq

"I mean, I read the newspaper. I mean, I can tell you what the headlines are. I must confess, if I think the story is, like, not a fair appraisal, I'll move on. But I know what the story's about." —Philadelphia, Dec. 12, 2005

"[I]t's a myth to think I don't know what's going on. It's a myth to think that I'm not aware that there's opinions that don't agree with mine, because I'm fully aware of that."—Philadelphia, Dec. 12, 2005

"I mean, there was a serious international effort to say to Saddam Hussein, you're a threat.

Pretty in pink - and at a discount

I'm a notoriously clumsy gift-giver. Lisa, who married me anyway, even had me return her engagement ring.

The rock, according to the mineralogist who sold it to me, was a rare cut with "a unique champagne color."

Translation: The diamond, unmarketable until I came along, was dingy and coffin-shaped, with the power to suck the romance straight out of the room.

My recommendation to lovers is to play it safe. Phones are practical, and AT&T is making them pretty this year for Valentine's Day.

AT&T is adding warm colors to the LG Shine, Blackberry Curve, and other phones, for example, and offering steep discounts through Feb. 14.

The Curve, red or otherwise, is the lightest Blackberry, and it comes with a 2.0 megapixel camera (just so-so by today's standards) and TeleNav GPS Navigator capability.
