Central Florida Asians ring in 4706 as Year of the Rat
From quiet prayer to colorful dragon dances, Asians in Central Florida will celebrate Lunar New Year not only on Feb. 7 -- the first day of Year 4706 on the Chinese calendar -- but throughout January and February.
"It is a time for renewal, family gatherings, eating rich foods and paying respect to your ancestors and elders," said Shally Wong, editor of Asia Trend magazine, based in Orlando.
This is the Year of the Rat -- the first creature in the 12-animal zodiac sequence.

Well of course Brian Burke made it clear he's not salivating at the chance to manage the Maple Leafs. What else could he possibly have said? The man's under contract to the Anaheim Ducks, for starters, and that's a team with a legitimate chance to repeat as Stanley Cup champions. They're going to need an offensive boost – Teemu Selanne or Mats Sundin would do nicely – but the Ducks are going to be right there at the end. Moreover, Burke clearly admires and appreciates his owners, Henry Samueli and his wife, and does not want to be seen as openly lobbying for a position with another team. Finally, Burke can be believed when he says he loves his current job. California's easy to take at this time of year, and being able to pursue Stanley Cups unfettered by nosy and meddlesome ownership is a wonderful life for a committed hockey man.

DUMMERSTON, Vt. -- The talk of military action against Iran has been steadily building over the past few weeks. A report in this week's Sunday Telegraph said that Pentagon strategists are drawing up plans for a massive surprise air and sea bombardment of Iran's 81 or so nuclear sites. The conservative British newspaper quoted a senior Pentagon official as saying that "this is more than just the standard military contingency assessment. This has taken on much greater urgency in recent months." According to the Guardian, another London newspaper, such a strike by U.S., British and Israeli forces would result in a large number of civilian and military casualties and would spark a much larger and longer war in the Middle East. The author of the report, "Iran: Consequences of a War," University of Bradford professor Paul Rogers, told the liberal British paper that unlike Iraq, where civilians had plenty of warning to evacuate targeted areas, Iran's nuclear facilities are in densely populated urban neighborhoods and thousands would die in a surprise raid.
