| Finding their place in history
Through her research, she found that 246-million children work, the vast majority in Asia. "I wanted to show people how devastating this is and how many kids have died because of this," said Hannah, an eighth-grader at Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg. Hannah said the project taught her a valuable lesson about global economics. "(Children) are a compliant and cheap workforce, and big businesses love that," she said. The strongest projects are those students are passionate about, said volunteer judge Spencer Briggs, a member of the Pinellas County Historical Society. "They become an expert on the subject and an instant historian," he said. "They're educating the judges on the topic." A group of teens from Osceola Middle School said they chose to write a play about influential black American women because they wanted a topic they could relate to.
Unconventional work defies obscurity
THERE are certain no-brainers in popular music: sex sells anything, even Celine Dion; children of famous artists rarely match their parents' ability but can outspend them; Michael Jackson is not a good babysitter. Ever. An obvious one to add to that list would be this: obscurity is guaranteed for an album of five lengthy, chorus-free pieces of music that owe as much to Elizabethan tunes and early 20th-century classical music as they do to the rambling tales of mid-period Dylan and Van Morrison and American folk, whose lyrics toy with ornate language, baroque structures and archaic forms, and which are sung by a woman whose voice can polarise audiences. And did I mention the album's feature instrument is a harp, there are orchestrated parts rather than any bass/guitar/drums axis, and the album title is unpronounceable? Certainly Joanna Newsom, the 26-year-old Californian whose second album, Ys, fits the above description, did not enter the studio under any misapprehension.
In Memory of Benazir Bhutto, Cut US Ties to Musharraf
The U.S. government should withhold assistance until Musharraf steps down and a caretaker government restores the independent judiciary, lifts restrictions on the press and sets up the conditions for fair elections. We should also begin to focus our attention on one of the key underlying causes for the growth of extremism in Pakistan: the extreme poverty that persists, especially in the tribal areas where al-Qaeda is most active. Benazir Bhutto spoke about this in the essay she wrote for our book. Her words were poignant then, and are even more poignant upon her death: "The neglect of rising poverty against the background of religious extremism can only complicate an already difficult world situation," she said. "The war against terrorism is primarily perceived as a war based on the use of force.
Document-Sharing Web Site Finds Racy Content Piling Up
When a group of college students launched the document-sharing Web site Scribd.com, they envisioned it as a place where they and others could publish term papers online. Users have added more than 350,000 documents in various languages, ranging from instructions for solving a Rubik's Cube to the sheet music from Johann Sebastian Bach's "Ave Maria." Groups dedicated to sharing everything from Federal Communications Commission reports to Japanese comic books have sprung up. But rivaling Scribd's growing collection ... .
