Wal-Mart Ditches Online Movie Downloads

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has closed an online movie download service it launched less than a year ago.

The retreat for Wal-Mart, which accounts for about 40 percent of all DVD sales, follows the company's 2005 decision to abandon efforts to build an online DVD rental service. The world's largest retailer instead turned its rental service over to Netflix Inc.

Wal-Mart still operates a music download service and continues to sell CDs and DVDs at retail stores and over the Internet for shipping by mail.

A message on Wal-Mart's video download Web site said the store closed Dec. 21. The Web site said customers who already have bought movies could continue to watch them.

In a statement, Wal-Mart spokeswoman Amy Collella said the company closed the store after Hewlett-Packard Co., which provided the software running the site, "made a business decision to discontinue its video download-only merchant store service."

Wal-Mart did not say whether it would attempt to start the service again using a different company's software.

Insider: In 2008, expect Dolly and Kenny to hit the road; PJ to hit ...

Kenny Chesney. Now recovering from shoulder surgery, the Ches, a Luttrell native who won his third Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year trophy in 2007, will be back on tour in 2008, pumping his latest CD, “Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates." He'll also support the CD by making music videos and putting out radio singles. Ches had one of the biggest concert tours in the world during 2007, when he packed arenas in many major cities. Touring with him over the summer will be Keith Urban. In March, he will turn — gasp! — 40.

Johnny Knoxville. The local formerly known as PJ Clapp is ready for the February launch of jackassworld.com, which will serve as the place for the franchise's newest stunts and news. At the end of 2007, Knoxville released to the Web and on DVD “Jackass 2.5," previously unseen material from “jackass number 2." In February, he, Steve-O, Bam Margera, Chris Pontius and the rest of the “Jackass" gang will also take control of MTV for 24 hours live.

Bob Alexander: Democrats, vote 'uncommitted'

I went to YouTube to look up his speeches to La Raza (Mexican militant support group for illegal aliens) and heard for myself his pandering of the illegals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEITOQfKVmo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z30rRxE9d-A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxccl-r6Gzs Statistics on illegal aliens: The Heritage Foundation ^ | 10/25/06 | Robert Rector The National Academy of Sciences has estimated that each immigrant without a high school degree will cost U.S. taxpayers, on average, $89,000 over the course of his or her lifetime.[3] This is a net cost above the value of any taxes the immi*grant will pay and does not include the cost of educating the immigrants children, which U.S. taxpayers would also heavily subsidize. In this way, the roughly six million legal immigrants without a high school diploma will impose a net cost of around a half-trillion dollars on U.S.

Canadian TV show offers chance to star as Maria in 'Sound of Music'

Auditions began Friday in Toronto to start a seven-city, cross-country audition tour, from Vancouver, British Columbia, to St. John's, Newfoundland, that will run through Feb. 9.

About 200 hopefuls will be invited for callbacks in Toronto, and about 50 finalists will attend the "Maria School" for further training.

The 8-part TV series set to air this summer will follow the "Marias" as they go through auditions, training sessions and evaluations.

Anyone doubt Amazon is serious about music downloads now?

Amazon announced Sunday that it plans an international rollout of its DRM-free MP3 music download service in a move that sets up a global scrap with Apple's iTunes service.

Is Amazon's service an iTunes killer yet? Not really. But there's no doubt about Amazon's intentions. I've downloaded more than a few DRM-free tunes from Amazon in recent weeks–most because I got a warning about burning more than seven CDs for a 5 year old's birthday party (there was two songs purchased on iTunes).

Without that little warning I probably wouldn't have tried Amazon's service. But the four big labels and thousands of independent ones convinced me to give it a try. Amazon's service is intuitive, easy and can compete with iTunes–even though Apple and Amazon have different takes on their service.
